The first trailer for Stan & Ollie, the new movie starring Steve Coogan and John C Reilly as iconic comedy duo Laurel and Hardy, has been released.

The film documents their comeback tour of the UK and Ireland in 1953 and reveals how they faced dwindling audiences while airing old grievances, battling health issues and reminiscing about old times.

Alan Partridge star Coogan plays Stan Laurel, who accuses Reilly's Oliver Hardy of betraying their friendship by making a film with someone else.

It also shows Hardy struggling with illness before the pair return to the stage for their last shows.

Referencing the famous song by Edith Piaf, Hardy tells his friend: "Je ne regrette rien, and you shouldn't regrette rien either."

The trailer also shows Shirley Henderson as Hardy's wife Lucille, and Nina Arianda as Laurel's wife Ida.

The film is directed by Jon S Baird, who previously made Filth, which starred James McAvoy, and was an adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s book of the same name.

Stan & Ollie was written by Jeff Pope, who worked with Coogan on Philomena in 2012.

Laurel and Hardy’s 1953 tour started with poor attendance but gradually became a success. While playing shows in Dublin's Olympia Theatre, they stayed at the Royal Marine Hotel in Dún Laoghaire from September 9 until October 13. They also visited Cobh.

"It’s really a love story between two guys who come to realise they can’t live without each other," said Baird when the project was announced in 2014.

"It’s a beautiful tale. It also tells the story of their off-screen personas, which were quite different to what people would imagine, knowing their on-screen ones."

Stan & Ollie will be released in UK cinemas on January 11, after the world premiere at the closing gala of the BFI London Film Festival on October 21.
