Poldark will be hanging up his scythe after the fifth season of the show, it has been confirmed.
The latest instalment of the Aidan Turner-led drama is due to begin shooting this week in Cornwall and the BBC has now released new details about the upcoming storyline.
The fourth season concluded with a shocking cliffhanger with the death of Elizabeth Warleggan (Heida Reed).
According to the Press Association, the fifth series will be set after the turn of the century and after the death of Elizabeth. It will follow Ross Poldark as he resolves to put Westminster behind him and spend more time with the people he loves.
However Poldark will be forced to challenge the establishment again when an old friend makes a plea for help.
Meanwhile, Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) must contend with dangers close to home and George (Jack Farthing) courts corrupt powers whose influence span the empire.
The fifth series will also see the introduction of new cast members, including Genius actress Lily Dodsworth Evans, Electric Dreams star Kerri McLean and and Grantchester's Sofia Oxenham.
The final season is set to air on BBC1 in 2019.
