Barbara Windsor is recovering "really well" after undergoing heart surgery, her husband has said.

The former EastEnders star had a pacemaker fitted following complications with the medication she has been taking for Alzheimer's.

Windsor's husband, Scott Mitchell, told The Sun that she is now recuperating at home, saying: "Barbara was suffering from a low heart rate which doctors thought was being caused by some of her medication.

"She was getting very dizzy and short of breath and fainted one day at home, so she had an eight-day hospital spell about four weeks ago and they’ve put in a pacemaker for her.

"But she’s recovering really well and is looking forward to getting out on the town again soon."

The 81-year-old actress was diagnosed with Alzheimer's four years ago but only revealed her battle with the illness earlier this year.

The star, famous for her roles in nine Carry On films and for playing pub landlord Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders, was given the heartbreaking diagnosis on April 22, 2014.

Last month, Windsor's former EastEnders co-star Rita Simons revealed that the actress "still has a laugh" and has "some really good days" since being diagnosed with the disease.

Windsor last appeared in EastEnders in May 2016 when Peggy Mitchell died after refusing treatment for cancer.
