Guardians of the Galaxy 3 has stopped production and the crew members have been told to look for alternative employment.

This news follows in the wake of Disney sacking director James Gunn after "offensive" tweets emerged. Most of the tweets dated from 2008 to 2011 and he made light of controversial topics.

Guardians 3 was already in pre-production with full production planned for the autumn and filming expected to start in the New Year.

Although there was no formal release date, the movie was widely expected to take one of the three Marvel slots reserved for 2020. The film's release may ultimately be years away.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the bad news, stating: "The production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is being put on hold for the time being as Marvel and Disney regroup on the project, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

"Sources say that crew members, which is, at this stage, a small group that was prepping for preproduction, are being dismissed and are free to look for new work."
