Denzel Washington had never been involved in a sequel – until The Equalizer 2 came along.
The Hollywood legend committed to playing the vengeful Robert McCall for a second time and it took the skills of writer Richard Wenk, who also penned the screenplay for The Equalizer, to get him onside.
"The studio said: 'We want another one'," the 63-year-old told RTÉ Entertainment. "I said: 'Yeah. Go write it. Let's see'. So I didn't commit to anything. I just wanted to see what Richard came up with.
"I read the script and I went, 'Whoah! I like the father/son aspect of it'. Not giving things away, [but] the loss of those that are close to him. And I said 'yes'."
Washington also added that this second Equalizer film is "more personal" for his character, who becomes a mentor for a young man and also seeks out the killers of someone close to him.
"It's much more about those who are closest to him and get closest to him," said Washington.
The Equalizer 2 is in cinemas nationwide from Friday August 17.
