Coronation Street star Alison King has hinted that sparks could fly again between her character Carla and her on-again-off-again love interest Peter Barlow.

Coming up on Coronation Street, Carla is set to take the helm of Underworld again when Ayla Nazir (Sair Khan) decides its best that she should take it over following Aidan's (Shayne Ward) death.

Without the financial resources needed for such a venture, Peter (Chris Gascoyne) comes to the rescue, but of course this throws everything up into the air, the past is revisited, and Carla wonders what she should do and what his intentions are.

"I think essentially they just love each other and it is a very kind relationship under the surface," King said of how Carla and Peter are drawn to each other.

"No matter what has gone on, even when they say they hate each other they actually know that they don’t. That is something in their chemistry, it isn’t something they can do anything about because they have similarities."

Though Carla will know that she should keep things strictly business between them, King reckons that won't be how it plays out on screen.

"I think she will want to try and do that but she is a swan on top of the water with her feet going like crazy underneath," she said.

"She knows it is not ideal going into business with Peter, she knows it would be disastrous because she knows her heart is flipping but she needs him and she hates that she does."

Having worked on many dramatic storylines during her time on the cobbles, King revealed that she would love to see Carla happy so it would allow her to try out something different.

"I’ve had a lot of drama, it is nice to get a balance and play the lighter stuff and some comedy," she added.

Coronation Street continues on Wednesday at 7.30pm on TV3 and ITV.
