Chris Rock has joined the cast of the 1950's-set fourth season of Fargo as a mob boss, it has been announced by FX.

The show's fourth run will be set in 1950 in Kansas City, Missouri, where two crime families - one Italian, one African-American, have struck an uneasy peace by trading their eldest sons.

FX said in a statement: "Chris Rock plays the head of one family, a man who - in order to prosper - has surrendered his oldest boy to his enemy, and who must in turn raise his son’s enemy as his own. It’s an uneasy peace, but profitable.

"And then the head of the Kansas City mafia goes into the hospital for routine surgery and dies. And everything changes.

"It’s a story of immigration and assimilation, and the things we do for money."

Noah Hawley, who created the award-winning series, will again return as showrunner, writer and director.

"I’m a fan of Fargo and I can’t wait to work with Noah," Rock said in a statement.

Each series of the anthology crime show is set in a different time period. The first, starring Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman, was set in 2006.

The second was set in 1979 and featured Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons and the most recent season, starring Ewan McGregor, Carrie Coon and Mary Beth Winstead, was set in 2010.

Production on season four will kick off next year.
