Catherine Tyldesley has thanked the Coronation Street team "for the most incredible seven years of my life" as she exited the soap in emotional scenes on Friday, while fans have paid tribute to her contribution to the soap on Twitter.

The 34-year-old actress, who announced she was leaving the cobbles last year, said she is "grateful every day" for the opportunity to work on the popular show.

Taking to Instagram, the Rovers Return barmaid shared a photo of a scene from the show where Eva is embracing Susie.

The picture was accompanied by the post, "Well this really is it guys. Eva's final episodes are on this evening.

"The most incredible seven years of my life. With the best team. Thank you universe - grateful every day."

Eva departed the Cobbles in emotional scenes that saw her end her feud with Aidan's father Johnny Connor, who told her Aidan's death "wasn't your fault, just like it wasn't mine".

She invited Johnny to visit both her and her baby Susie in France before exiting the show, despite Toyah Battersby begging for her to stay.

The final scene saw Eva sitting in the back of a taxi, saying to her baby: "It's just me and you now, babes."

Fans took to Twitter to pay tribute to the soap star, saying she "couldn't have been better for the role" and that she's "one of the most honest, open and brilliant actors on TV".

Many Corrie viewers said they are "so sad" Eva has exited the show.

Tyldesley previously said she was blown away by the support from fans after she announced her soap departure.

In a statement announcing her departure, she said it had been a "dream job" which made it a "difficult decision to leave".

Tyldesley joined the soap in 2011 and left briefly in 2015 to go on maternity leave.

Coronation Street airs on TV3 and ITV on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
