Great news for cartoon fans and anyone who was primary school age in the 1990s – the Rugrats are making a return!

Chuckie, Angelica, Tommy and the gang were hugely popular cartoon characters from 1991 to 2004. The show's 172 episodes make it the eighth longest-running American animated show in US TV history.

The new film – the Rugrats' fourth in total - will land next year, with Nickelodeon commissioning a 26-episode new season for the small screen.

So far, there have already been three Rugrats movies: The Rugrats Movie, Rugrats In Paris: The Movie and Rugrats Go Wild – but this new one is planned to be a CGI/live-action hybrid, similar to The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.

The show’s original creators, Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain, will all be overseeing the TV reboot, as well as the new movie.

Sarah Levy, the chief operating officer at Viacom Media Networks and interim president at Nickelodeon, said the show was "one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history.

"We are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures.

"What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: kids are fascinated with the world of babies. We can’t wait for today’s kids to meet Tommy, Chuckie and pals."
