Today's highlights include the highly anticipated Picnic at Hanging Rock, the return of the brilliantly anarchic Mr Robot – and there's the second World Cup semi-final...

Pick of the day

Picnic at Hanging Rock, 9.05pm, BBC Two

This looks extremely promising – though it'll have to deliver in spades to beat this week's other big new show, Sky Atlantic's Sharp Objects.

Natalie Dormer heads the cast in this six-part adaptation of Joan Lindsay's novel and subsequent film, set in the final decade of the 19th century.

Beautiful and mysterious widow Hester Appleyard (Dormer) arrives in Australia, haunted by a secret past.

Paying in cash for an isolated mansion out in the bush, she establishes a school for young ladies - and six years later, Appleyard College is a success.

But in the strange brooding landscape of Hanging Rock, something unthinkable happens . . .

New or Returning Shows

The Syndicate, 10.00pm, TV3

A great cast – including Alison Steadman and Siobhan Finneran – sees this BBC drama about lottery syndicates heading to a hospital for its second season.

Becky Atkinson is a nurse at St Anthony's Hospital in Bradford, along with her mother Mandy, and is in a syndicate with auxiliary nurse Rose Wilson, nurse Tom Bedford and porter Alan Walters.

Becky struggles as a young mother and on a night out, she inadvertently hands the week's lottery ticket to Luke Summers, a rugby player for the Bradford Bulls.

A nurse who left the syndicate four months ago discovers they have won £72,000,000 (that's nearly €100 million!) on the lottery, and Becky faces a race against time to get the ticket back.

Patrick Melrose, Sky Box Sets

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as the eponymous Patrick in Sky’s adaptation of Edward St Aubyn’s acclaimed novels about the troubled lives of privileged English people.

Critically-acclaimed, it's pretty much a tour-de-force from Cumberbatch, who is pretty amazing in the lead role of a messed-up posh bloke trying to come to terms with some horrible family experiences.

If you missed it while it was a few weeks ago, don't miss this chance to catch up with what's been one of the major TV highlights of the year so far.

Don't Miss

Mr Robot, 10.30pm, TG4

Love, love, love this show – though it's very much on the cult end of TV and won't appeal to everyone.

After a pretty dark second season, this third run of the paranoid and complex drama about Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek), a cybersecurity engineer and hacker who has social anxiety disorder and clinical depression, has been hailed as as a 'noir masterpiece' in some quarters.

As the battle against corporate monster E Corp continues, Zhang intends for Elliot to die once his work for the Dark Army is complete. But that's not going to happen, right?

World Cup Watch

Croatia v England, KO 7.00pm, RTÉ 2

With France through to Sunday's final thanks to an impressive performance against Belgium in last night's opening semi, this evening's game will determine who will join them in the decider.

Given the meagre talent at his disposal, England coach Gareth Southgate has made teamwork and set-piece play the cornerstones of his side's march to the semis, while Croatia have some truly gifted players such as Real Madrid's Luka Modric and Barcelona's Ivan Rakitic.

Darragh Maloney and co are in studio from 6pm to set the scene.
