Actress Susan Sarandon says that she was one of almost 600 women arrested at a sit-in in support of migrants at a US Senate building.

Pramila Jayapal, Democratic Representative, was also detained. She described the government policy on child migration as cruel. Washington police have said that 575 people in all were charged with unlawfully demonstrating on Thursday.

The women who gathered were protesting against the US government's migration policy and the separation of children from their parents on the southern border. Many women hoisted banners with the hashtag #FamiliesBelongTogether.

The protestors chanted "we care", a gibe at Melania Trump's infamous jacket bearing the message: "I really don't care, do u?" which she wore during a visit to a migrant child detention centre in Texas.

Sarandon announced her arrest on Twitter.  The actress was also arrested in 1999 during a protest against the police shooting of an unarmed African American teenager in New York.

Last week, President Donald Trump yielded to public pressure and signed an executive order that families be kept together in migrant detention centres. Protestors have countered that the President's order does not address the issue of families already separated. 2,342 children were taken from their parents between May 5 and June 9 alone.

Further protests are scheduled for today.

Actress Susan Sarandon wears a Mother's Day anti-war protest tee-shirt in front of the White House in May 2006. Several hundred protesters were calling on U.S. President George W. Bush to bring U.S. troops home from Iraq.
