Former television presenter John Leslie has been cleared of sexual assault after the charge was found "not proven" in a trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

The 53-year-old had been accused of putting his hand down the back of a woman's trousers while they were dancing at her hen night in an Edinburgh nightclub last June.

Leslie, appearing in court under his real name John Stott, had denied the charge, which was found "not proven" by Sheriff Adrian Cottam at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Friday.

The Press Association reports that the Sheriff said it had been a "difficult decision" as the evidence from the woman, who cannot be named, "on its own appears to be a credible and reliable account".

When looking at the case as a whole, he said the evidence from the defence "adds up to a combination of factors" that caused reasonable doubt.

Outside the court, Leslie told reporters: "First of all, I'm obviously relieved at the court's verdict today, clearing my name. Because I know I did nothing wrong that night a year ago and I've said so from the very beginning."

Leslie said it was "now time to move on from this year of hell".

He thanked his family "and those close to me" for "getting me through this ordeal".

"Without their support, I wouldn't be here today," he concluded. "It's been quite a process. That's all I can say."
