Actress Charlene McKenna has revealed that her family have had a lucky escape from a house fire - but their home in Co Monaghan was destroyed in the blaze.

The Ripper Street and RAW star took to Instagram on Friday to share her story and thank neighbours and Monaghan Fire Brigade for their efforts to save the family home in Glaslough.

McKenna posted a picture of herself in her old school uniform, which survived the blaze.

"When your family home burns down (everyone is ok) and you're all devastated and all your designer clothes are gone BUT your school uniform miraculously survived," McKenna wrote.

"On a serious note I'd like to thank everyone at #monaghanfirebrigade and all our neighbours who went to all points on the country roads to make sure the fire brigade didn't get lost! #humansareamazing," she continued.

"And finally PLEASE turn switches off at the wall. It takes a second and can save lives and homes! We are so sad but we've been SO lucky. Let the rebuilding commence."
