Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper star in the moody new trailer for A Star Is Born, in which they play two musicians who fall in love but come up against intense challenges.

The Oscar-nominated Silver Linings Playbook actor makes his directorial debut with the remake, in which he stars alongside singing superstar Lady Gaga in her first major feature film role.

The story follows Jackson Maine (Cooper), a talented but troubled country music star whose career is in decline. He helps struggling artist Ally (Gaga) take her place in the spotlight while battling his internal demons.

The trailer contains scenes of Bradley Cooper taking to the stage at Glastonbury in 2017, just before a set by Kris Kristofferson, to record a live performance for the film.

The movie features original songs performed by Gaga and written by the singer alongside Cooper and artists including Mark Ronson and Jason Isbell.

Gaga previously said she was "elated" to be working with Cooper, describing him as a "brilliant visionary artist".

This is the fourth version of A Star Is Born to make it onto the big screen. The original was released in 1937 and it was remade in 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason, and again in 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.

A Star Is Born is slated for release on October 5.
