A host of stars have taken to Twitter to congratulate British royal couple Prince William and Kate Middleton on the arrival of their third child, a baby boy, including Barack and Michelle Obama .

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed their new son on Monday April 23 at London's St Mary's hospital and returned to their home at Kensington Palace later that day. Their third child, following Prince George, 4, and Princess Charlotte, 2, is now fifth in line to the throne.

Former US First Lady Michelle Obama shared a heartfelt message to the royal couple, posting a cute picture of Barack Obama with Prince William and Prince George in a robe along with the caption: "Barack and I are thrilled to congratulate The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on their newest arrival! We hope to meet him soon for a Kensington Palace pajama party. I’ll wear my robe!

Singer and One Direction star Liam Payne used the couple's full official titles while congratulating them on Twitter, writing: "Congratulations to her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge Kate and the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William on the birth of their baby boy!"

Talkshow host Ellen DeGeneres added her congratulations to the mix along with the quip: "Kate Middleton's new baby is now 5th in line to the throne, and season 43 of The Crown," referencing the Netflix drama about the royal family.

Hunger Games actress and director Elizabeth Banks passed on her well wishes to "the parents and big sibs" Charlotte and George.

Comedian Sarah Silverman pitched in with a list of possible royal baby names. The couple are yet to announce what they have named their third child.

David Walliams joked that "Prince Harry just got demoted again".

He then suggested the new baby could be named after rapper Kanye West.
