Arnold Schwarzenegger thanked fans for their support and well-wishes as he recovers from open-heart surgery, saying that he’s feeling "good" but "not great yet".

The 70-year-old actor and former Governor of California underwent surgery for a catheter valve replacement at the Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles last month.

The Austrian-born star posted a short video message to his Twitter account thanking followers for their kind words, along with updating them on his recovery.

In the video, Schwarzenegger, seated at a chess board, says: "Thank you so much for all your wishes and for all the cards and the phone calls and the emails and the texts and all this kind of stuff that I got from around the world.

"I really appreciate that very much and you're very kind," he added.

"I just wanted you to know that I'm feeling much better. I can't say - even with my positive attitude - that I'm great, because I'm not great yet. Great is a totally different level."

He continued: "But I'm good. I feel good. "I'm here at a chessboard playing a little bit of chess here to freshen my mind and my memory a little bit.

"And we move forward. So I will stay in touch with all of you you. And thank you all for being such jewels."

In March, Daniel Ketchell, Schwarzenegger's spokesperson said that although an open-heart surgery team had attended the operation, they were only there as a precaution.

The spokesperson said that the procedure was a success and that Schwarzenegger is currently recovering from the surgery in the hospital.

Ketchell later tweeted that the actor is awake and in "good spirits" following the surgery and claimed Schwarzenegger’s first words upon waking from the operation were "I’m back".
