New drama Deep State begins, spot-on tech sitcom Silicon Valley returns and heart-tugging family drama This Is Us continues its second season.

Pick of the day

Silicon Valley, 10.10pm, Sky Atlantic & NOW TV

The consistently hilarious US dot comedy is back on Sky Atlantic for a fifth season of coding and calamity.

And the Pied Piper team may actually be on the verge of success, even though everything that could go wrong has done so, and often in spectacular fashion.

And the show's lost TJ Miller, was was great as the larger-than-life Erlich Bachman, the mouthy, stoner co-owner who was last seen in a state of constant intoxication somewhere in Tibet, unlikely to ever return.

As the new season begins, Richard Hendricks’ decentralised internet PiperNet approaches its debut, and the gang have ample funding and new offices. What could possibly muck things up now?

New or Returning Shows

Deep State, 9.00pm, FOX

Mark Strong leads the cast here in this British-made drama (a bit unusual that, for Fox) as Max Easton, a retired MI6 Secret Service operative and member of elite British/America team called The Section, coaxed back into the field to try to shut down an Iranian missile programme.

The situation is complicated by Max’s estranged son, Harry, who has followed his father into the espionage world and - as the series opens - may have died in the line of duty.

Air B'n'B Nightmares, 9.00pm, 3e

Last year some 80,000 people in the UK listed their property on room bookings site Airbnb and the ever-popular London has become one of its fastest growing markets.

While the majority of its users have positive experiences, this show also reveals what can go wrong when you open up your home to complete strangers or book to stay with someone you've never met before.

Sure it's bad enough having to live with your own family, without bringing others into your personal maze . . .

Ending Tonight

Big Cats About the House, 8.00pm, BBC Two

In this final episode of this fascinating series (well - if you like cats), ten-week-old jaguar cub Maya is starting to push the family to their limits and later Giles welcomes an injured cheetah cub into his care.

With Maya’s development coming along so well, Giles is invited to take her on BBC Breakfast so he can raise the profile of all big cats around the world.

Don't Miss

This is Us, 10.45pm, RTÉ One

Easily the most heartwarming show on TV right now, This is Us is a perfect antidote to all the anger and hate that's out there. It just oozes empathy. Such a shame it's not in a prime time-slot. It would be huge.

In tonight's episode, Kate visits Kevin on the set of his latest movie, Randall and Beth receive exciting news, and Rebecca tries to reconnect with Jack.

If you haven't seen This is Us yet, take a look at this season two trailer (featuring some real people, by the way, and not just actors), have a good cry, and start watching this great show. Oh, and give someone you care about a big hug.
