Comedian and star of Damo & Ivor Andy Quirke has told RTÉ Entertainment that he always wanted the fictional brothers to make it to the big screen and admits he's ready to set his sights on more serious shows.
In their first big screen outing, twins Damo and Ivor, who were separated at birth, set off in search of their long lost third brother John Joe, an adventure that will take them out of Dublin and lead them on an epic journey across Ireland.
Speaking to RTÉ Entertainment, Quirke said: "Eight years ago, I started writing this movie called 'Damo Does the Dam', which is Damo going to Amsterdam. But it didn't have the legs to just have one character, it needed two characters, and all the family, and all that kind of thing.
"Even after I did series one, even if the movie was offered, I still wouldn't have done it because I would have thought that we needed to build more of a fan base with two series' first."
"I thought it would be the better way to do it. If I had done a movie first, I don't think the move would have been up to scratch."
"The next thing that I do, it won't be Damo & Ivor. I want to do something that is actually serious. I'm going to write something that is serious and try and get that done.
"I don't want to pigeonhole myself. The cool thing is that because I've already disguised myself as the characters in how they look and dress, that I probably haven't pigeonholed myself.
"But yeah, I want to be able to do some serious acting and then I can still always go back to comedy. Comedy is the hardest - if you don't make people laugh, you've failed.
Damo, Ivor and John Joe will be hitting the silver screen in Damo & Ivor: The Movie on March 16.
It's not the first RTÉ comedy to be adapted for the big screen with The Hardy Bucks Movie following the lads as they travelled to Poland to support the Irish football team during the Euro 2012 football tournament.
