Stephen Fry has announced that he has been battling prostate cancer.

The 60-year-old British broadcaster, actor and entertainer uploaded a 12-minute video to Twitter, and also on his website.

On Twitter it carries the caption: "For the last 2 months I’ve been in the throes of a rather unwelcome and unexpected adventure. I’m sorry I haven’t felt able to talk about it till now, but here I am explaining what has been going on.’

In the video, Fry revealed that he discovered he had cancer in his prostate following an MRI scan.

He said: "Here's my news I want to share with you. I don't know how to say this actually, but it's not difficult.

"I went to see my doctor just before Christmas for a flu jab. I'd heard it was going to be a bit bad this year, thought a flu jab would be a good idea.

"So I went to see my doctor, Tony, who was at my school, a year or two above me but I've known him and he's been my doctor for many years. Well let's have a general check-up, an MOT, I have one of these every year.

"So aside from the flu jab I had my blood taken and urine and, you know, blood pressure, tapping here, tapping there, say "ah", say 99, you know.

"I didn't think much more of it really, then the next day he called me up and he said I'm a little worried about your PSA levels.

"I don't know if you know what PSA are, if you are a man you certainly should, it stands for prostate specific antigens, these are the things that the prostate gives out if its under attack from a tumour."
