Dublin Zoo, mother Anak and father Upali are celebrating the birth of an Asian elephant calf.

Anak gave birth to the male calf last Saturday, February 10, after a 22-month gestation.

The new arrival, who is estimated to weigh approximately 90kg, joins the rest of the herd of Asian elephants on Dublin Zoo's Kaziranga Forest Trail.

He is Anak's second calf and the seventh elephant calf born at the zoo in under four years.

Gerry Creighton, Operations Manager at Dublin Zoo, said its newest resident is "healthy, strong and was standing within minutes of his birth".

"It is fascinating to watch the younger females interact with the calf, as they are working together to protect him," he continued.

"Witnessing the sights and sounds of an elephant birth, is important to inexperienced females in the herd as it prepares them for motherhood."

Mums the wiser, so.
