Valentine's Day is the most romantic day of the year, or so the greeting card companies would like you to think, and a host of stars have been taking to social media to share their loved-up celebrations.

Fashion designer and Spice Girl star Victoria Beckham took to Instagram to post a cute photo of herself and hubbie David stretched out on a sofa cuddling, saying "love u so much (sic)".

David also posted a couple's photo wishing his wife a happy Valentine's Day, writing to his followers: "May today be filled with love and happiness around the world".

It was recently revealed that actor Idris Elba popped the question to his girlfriend Sabrina Dowhre, and on Wednesday the 29-year-old model posted a photo of them holding hands along with the caption: "Baby! I can’t tell you enough how happy you make me and how lucky I feel to have found a love like this, you make my heart feel so full. I love you. Forever will always feel to short. #imsuchacheeseball @idriselba"

Dancing with the Stars pro dancer Ryan McShane posted a photo of himself planting a kiss on his girlfriend Thalia Heffernan's cheek with the message: "#happyvalentinesday my love @thaliaheffernan I didn’t fall in love with you because of how you look, but my god your the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen!"

Storm Keating tagged her husband Ronan Keating in a photo of the couple together in Phuket, Thailand celebrating the day along with their son Cooper, writing: "Valentines Day 💙 #myboys"

Ronan also shared a pic of the holiday, showing Storm and Cooper beside an infinity pool. He joked: "We always travel with our own wind machine".

Kim Kardashian West, who welcomed her third child with husband Kanye West in January, wrote on Instagram: "I love you to infinity! Happy Valentine’s Day!!!"

Irish star Aoibhin Garrihy posted an inspirational quote to her followers, writing: "Self love is the greatest love of all".

TV star Angela Scanlon, who is expecting her first child with her husband Roy Horgan, posted a picture of her delicious looking breakfast with the caption: "Forget flowers, I got a turmeric, black pepper & cardamon latte for V Day. All the stops have been well & truly pulled out".

Dancing with the Stars host Amanda Byram posted an in-depth message to her followers: "Hey kids, listen up!

"Love is not about a day. It’s not about gifts. Valentines Day is a story that’s been made up, and a story that Hallmark have capitalised on. Buying into the story that’s become an expensive circus, is fine - it’s fun and silly and if that’s what makes you happy, then go for it and enjoy!! BUT there’s a danger that people take it too seriously and see it as a statement and a proclamation of how much someone does or does not love them. It is not!

"It means more if they show you that love in another way on another day. In fact I believe that it’s a total cop out by having one day that you HAVE to say "I love you", when it’s imposed upon you!

"So my message is this.... who cares if he or she does or does not give you a card or chocolates or a kiss today. Material items are NOT an indication of the level of love in your life! Better still, go buy yourself flowers, coffee, chocolate, champagne because loving yourself is WAY more important!

Gisele went for a romantic photo of herself and hubbie smooching on the beach with the message: "Happy Valentine’s Day! Sending so much love to all! "

Irish singer Nadine Coyle wished her followers a "Happy Valentine's Day my loves".

Brooklyn Beckham posted a black and white photo of his girlfriend, actress Chloe Grace Moretz, with the caption: "Happy birthday baby 🌷 love you to the moon and back xx"

Geri Halliwell and her husband Christian Horner posed in cosy ski-gear for their Valentine's snap.

Cinderella actress Lily James Instagrammed a selfie with the caption: "Happy V day . Love yourself . Love your person. Love love love."

Filmmaker Dustin Lance Black took the opportunity to announce on Instagram that he and his husband, Olympic athlete Tom Daley, are having a baby by posting a picture of them holding up an ultrasound scan.

"A very happy #ValentinesDay from ours to yours", the caption read.

Actress Vanessa Hudgens posted a loved-up red carpet photo with her boyfriend Austin Butler, writing: "Our 6th Valentine’s Day and it blows me away how madly in love I am with you all these years later."

Rashida Jones revived the Galentine's Day tradition created by Parks and Recreation by posting a photo of herself with her former co-stars Amy Poehler, Aubrey Plaza and Kathryn Hahn along with the message: "Galentine's Day! Forever and ever"
