The Passion of the Christ star Jim Caviezel has confirmed he will reprise his role as Jesus in director Mel Gibson's sequel to the 2004 box office phenomenon and has claimed that it will be "the biggest film in history".

Discussing the Resurrection-themed film with USA Today, Caviezel said: "There are things that I cannot say that will shock the audience. It's great. Stay tuned."

On the subject of Braveheart director Gibson's approach for the sequel, Caviezel replied: "I won't tell you how he's going to go about it.

"But I'll tell you this much, the film he's going to do is going to be the biggest film in history. It's that good."

"Braveheart, that's a film that took a long time to be able to crack," Caviezel added.

"The same thing for Passion. And the same thing for this. He's finally got it. So that is coming."

Nominated for three Oscars, The Passion of the Christ made $612m at the global box office on a $30m budget and has been called 'the most successful independent film of all time'.

Covering the last twelve hours in the life of Jesus, the film was praised by reviewers but was also heavily criticised for its alleged anti-Semitism and, in particular, its graphic violence.

In a 2016 interview with USA Today, Gibson said of the sequel: "We're trying to craft this in a way that's cinematically compelling and enlightening so that it shines new light, if possible, without creating some weird thing."

Caviezel will soon be seen in the Andrew Hyatt-directed Paul, Apostle of Christ, playing the Apostle Luke opposite James Faulkner as Paul.
