Celebrity experts including Noel Edmonds, David Walliams and Lenny Henry have voted  Blue Peter the best British children’s television programme of all time in a new Radio Times poll.

A 30-strong panel were asked to name their five favourite children’s TV shows and their votes were compiled for the final top 50.

Childrens' school drama Grange Hill - which starred future EastEnders stars Todd Carty and Susan Tully - was second, Newsround was third, madcap Saturday morning show Tiswas was fourth, and the BBC's perhaps more reserved Saturday morning show Multi-Coloured Swap Shop was fifth.

16 of the top 20 shows were broadcast in the 1980s, making it the most popular decade for kids’ TV.

Blue Peter, the world’s longest-running children’s TV show, made its debut in 1958 and will celebrate its 60th anniversary this October.
