The new series began on Tuesday night as the eight women entered the house for the launch show. More male celebrities will also be revealed as new contestants on Friday night.
The news that Barnes was joining the competition was revealed by host Rylan Clark-Neal on spin-off show Big Brother's Bit on the Side.
With New Order's 1990 World Cup song World in Motion playing in the background – a hit former England midfielder Barnes rapped on – Clark-Neal said: "Sing it for England. You don't get more testosterone here than him."
The other contestants already in the house are former British MP and Strictly Come Dancing celebrity Ann Widdecombe, newsreader India Willoughby, MTV presenter Jess Impiazzi, former detective constable Maggie Oliver and writer Rachel Johnson.

Celebrity Big Brother continues on 3e and Channel 5 at 9pm weeknights.
