2016 was bookended by the deaths of two music greats, David Bowie and George Michael, and, sadly, this year has also seen the passing of some much-loved stars of culture, entertainment and the arts. We look back at those we lost in 2017

JANUARY

John Hurt

8 – Peter Sarstedt, English singer/songwriter who had a global hit with Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)? Age 75

12 – William Peter Blatty, writer/filmmaker famous for The Exorcist. Age 89

19 – Miguel Ferrer, actor who starred in Robocop and NCIS:LA. Age 61

23 – Gorden Kaye, actor who played René Artois in sitcom Allo ‘Allo! Age 75

25 – John Hurt, actor who starred in many films including 1984 and The Elephant Man. Age 77

25 – Mary Tyler Moore, actress famous for The Dick Van Dyke Show and The Mary Tyler Show. Age 80

Bill Paxton

5 – David Axelrod, Jazz musician. Age 85

8 - Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, "It Girl" and socialite. Age 45.

12 – Al Jarreau, Jazz Singer famous for We’re in This Love Together and After All. Age 76

17 - Peter Skellern, singer/songwriter best-known for You're A Lady. Age 69.

25 – Bill Paxton, actor who starred in Aliens, Predator 2 and Apollo 13. Age 61

18 – Chuck Berry singer/songwriter and rock `n’ roll pioneer. Age 90

21 – Colin Dexter, novelist who wrote the Inspector Morse crime novels and TV show. Age 86

6 – Don Rickles, comedian/actor and "King of the insults". Age 90

7 – Tim Pigott-Smith, actor who starred in English TV series The Jewel in the Crown. Age 70

11 – J. Geils, Musician of J. Geils Blues Band, who had a US No 1 hit with Centerfold. Age 71

19 - Pat "Fitzy" Fitzpatrick, keyboardist who playdd with Aslan, the Blades and Van Morrison. Age 60.

22 – Erin Moran, actress who played Joanie Cunningham on Happy Days and Joanie Loves Chachi. Age 56

26 – Jonathan Demme, filmmaker/director who made Stop Making Sense, Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia. Age 73
