Actor and comedian TJ Miller has denied allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman while they were both students at George Washington University in Washington, DC in the early 2000s.

Miller issued a lengthy joint statement with wife Kate Gorney and shared it on Instagram after website The Daily Beast interviewed the woman about her allegations.

Miller and Gorney said they "stand together" against what they described as "false accusations".

"We both champion and continue to stand up for people everywhere who have truly suffered injustice seeking to have justice brought into their lives," they concluded.

Miller is best known for his role in the HBO comedy series Silicon Valley. In May of this year it was announced that Miller and HBO had "mutually agreed" he would not be returning for the fifth season.

On Tuesday (December 19) US network Comedy Central confirmed it had cancelled Miller's animated series, The Gorburger Show, telling TIME magazine that the decision had been taken during the summer and was not related to the sexual assault allegations.
