Riordans' Biddy White Lennon dies

The death has occurred of the much-loved actress and food author Biddy White Lennon.

She was one of Ireland's best known and popular actresses, playing the role of Maggie in the RTÉ drama series The Riordans, which ran for more than 30 years on TV and radio.

She was also a writer and author, specialising in food, hospitality and tourism, and was a founder member of the Irish Food Writer's Guild.

In recent years she was also a judge on TV3’s The Great Irish Bake Off.

In a statement, RTÉ said: "RTÉ is saddened to hear about the death of our former colleague Biddy White Lennon.

"Biddy, who worked on both television and radio in RTÉ will always be fondly remembered for her role as Maggie in The Riordans.

"Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this sad time. May she rest in peace."

Broadcaster and publisher Nora Casey tweeted that she was "devastated to hear that the beautiful and passionate Biddy White Lennon has left us," adding that she "was an amazing inspiration".

Biddy's former Great Irish Bake Off co-star Anna Nolan added: "We all loved her" while expressing her sadness on hearing the news.
