AC/DC's co-founder Malcolm Young has died aged 64. The guitarist, who had been suffering from dementia, passed away surrounded by his family who have paid tribute.

"It is with deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of Malcolm Young, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother. Renowned for his musical prowess, he was a songwriter, guitarist, performer, producer and visionary who inspired many.

"From the outset he knew what he wanted to achieve, and along with his younger brother, took to the world stage, giving their all at every show. Nothing less would do for their fans." Young's family also asked that their privacy be respected " during this time of heartbreak and grief."

Born in January 1953 in Glasgow, Malcolm composed much of the band's material and designed many of the killer guitar riffs that gained AC/DC a dedicated following throughout the globe.

In April 2014 it was announced that Young was taking temporary leave of absence to receive treatment for his illness, before retiring permanently that September.

He was replaced by his nephew Stevie for the band’s most recent tour on the back of the 2014 album Rock Or Bust.

"Today it is with deep heartfelt sadness that AC/DC has to announce the passing of Malcolm Young," AC/DC announced in a statement.

"Malcolm, along with Angus, was the founder and creator of AC/DC. With enormous dedication and commitment he was the driving force behind the band.

"As a guitarist, songwriter and visionary he was a perfectionist and a unique man.

"He always stuck to his guns and did and said exactly what he wanted. He took great pride in all that he endeavored. His loyalty to the fans was unsurpassed."

AC/DC's guitarist Angus Young, Malcolm's brother, added his own tribute. "As his brother it is hard to express in words what he has meant to me during my life, the bond we had was unique and very special.

"He leaves behind an enormous legacy that will live on forever. Malcolm, job well done."

Their older brother, George Young, who had been a guitarist with Easybeat and AC/DC's producer, died last month at the age of 70.

Musicians, friends and fans have been paying tribute.
