The state of hymn! Peter Kay brings big band religion to Late Late

Peter Kay turned the Late Late into his own kind of holy show on Friday night by trying out big band hymns on the audience.

The British comedian, whose mischief-making as a guest eight years ago went down in Late Late history, joined Ryan Tubridy to discuss heading back out on tour, his holiday home in Tipperary and his Irish roots.

But when Tubridy asked Kay if he would ever think of making an album, things took a turn for the surreal.

"They're all doing them in England!" said Kay of celebrities making records. "Nick Knowles has got one out! You know him? Ex DIY SOS? Shocking! Jason Manford, who's a very good friend of mine, a comedian. [Cheer from audience] Oh no, you've never heard him sing! No, no, no I'm joking - he's a very good singer."

"I'd do big band hymns. Do a bit of Bublé with them"

"I've never fancied it," Kay said of going into the studio. "If I was going to do something I'd do something different. I'd do something for charity…"

"What kind of music would you do or what would you be considering?" asked Tubridy.

After some thought, Kay replied: "I'd do hymns. Why not? I'd do hymns. There's some belting hymns. Brilliant hymns. When I was an altar boy the hymns were great."

Having established that How Great Thou Art was Tubridy's favourite hymn, Kay continued: "I'd do big band hymns. Do a bit of Bublé with them or summat [sic] like that."

And with that he was off [key].

Classic or cringe? You decide.
