Shawn Mendes was the big winner at Sunday's MTV Europe Music Awards when she picked up three awards, including the inaugural best artist prize.

The 19-year-old Canadian singer won the new genderless best artist category, beating off competition from Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande.

He also scooped the best song award for his hit single There's Nothing Holding Me Back, which he performed at the star-studded ceremony, and the best fans award.

This year's Glastonbury headliner Ed Sheeran didn't go home empty-handed from the awards ceremony in London. He won in the best live category, while Dua Lipa collected the best new artist prize.

Coldplay bagged the best rock act gong, with Eminem named the best hip-hop artist. 

U2 were presented with with the Global Icon honour. They dedicated the honour, which had previously been awarded to Queen, Whitney Houston and Eminem, to record producer Chris Blackwell.

Actor Jared Jeto, whose band 30 Seconds To Mars won the best alternative award at the ceremony, presented U2 with the honour, saying "U2 isn't just a band, it's a way of life".

American-Cuban singer-songwriter Camila Cabello, who was formerly in the girl group Fifth Harmony, won the best pop award and took to the stage to perform her single Havana during the show.

Taylor Swift, who was expected to be one of the big winners of the night with six nominations, didn't take home any awards on the night.

The ceremony at the SSE Wembley Arena in London featured performances from Stormzy, former One Direction member Liam Payne, Clean Bandit and Eminem.
