Star Wars is to get a new trilogy and TV series. However, these fresh adventures in a galaxy far, far away will move away from the beloved Skywalker saga and explore new areas and stories.

Lucasfilm has announced that Last Jedi director Rian Johnson will create the new films, which he is also set to write and direct, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman producing.

"We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi," said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. "He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy."

Disney also announced on Thursday that it is working on a live-action Star Wars TV series to premiere on its new streaming service, which will be launched in 2019.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is in cinemas on December. 15, 2017. No release dates have been set for the new films.
