U2's Saturday night concert at St. Louis' Dome at America's Center has been cancelled in the wake of recent protests that erupted in the city following the acquittal of police officer Jason Stockley.
Eight police officers were injured in clashes with demonstrators in St Louis when a largely peaceful protest turned violent after a Missouri judge acquitted a former police officer of the murder of a black man suspected of dealing drugs.
A joint statement from U2 and ticket-selling site Live Nation said the band "regrettably announce" that their scheduled gig has been cancelled.
"We have been informed by the St. Louis Police Department that they are not in a position to provide the standard protection for our audience as would be expected for an event of this size," it went on.
"We have also been informed that local crowd security personnel would not be at full capacity."
The statement finished: "In light of this information, we cannot in good conscience risk our fans’ safety by proceeding with tonight’s concert.
"As much as we regret having to cancel, we feel it is the only acceptable course of action in the current environment."
U2's The Joshua Tree Tour commemorates the 30th anniversary of the band's landmark album.
