Fergie and Josh Duhamel have separated after eight years of marriage, the couple announced on Thursday Sept 14.

"With absolute love and respect we decided to separate as a couple earlier this year," the stars said in a joint statement provided to US entertainment site EW.

"To give our family the best opportunity to adjust, we wanted to keep this a private matter before sharing it with the public," it adds. "We are and will always be united in our support of each other and our family."

Best known for being the female vocalist for the hip hop group The Black Eyed Peas, Fergie has also enjoyed a solo singing career, sa well as a film and TV career. Her new album Double Dutchess is released on September 22.

Duhamel has also enjoyed a TV and film career after earlier earning a living as a model, and is best known for his ongoing role in the Transformers franchise.

Fergie (42) and Duhamel (44) have a son Axl (3), and they were last seen together on social media in an Instagram post marking the couple's eighth wedding anniversary.

"8 years!! Love you babe," Duhamel wrote.
