Jonathan Rhys Meyers and his wife Mara Lane have revealed that they recently lost a baby after Mara had a miscarriage.

In a message posted on Instagram, Mara said that they are heartbroken and praises Jonathan's strength and talents as an actor.

She said that her husband has taken it badly and is seeking treatment.

Also in the message she highlights how he was let down by the Irish health service on two occasions when he sought help for his struggle with alcohol abuse.

The couple welcomed their first child, a baby boy called Wolf, last December.

Lane later took to Instagram to praise her husband saying he was "the best father", saying he is "ridiculously loving, super protective, patient and attentive" to their son.

The couple met in December 2013 and reportedly got engaged 11 months later.

Rhys Meyers recently finished working on period drama The Aspern Papers, an adaptation of Henry James' acclaimed 19th century novel.

The Aspern Papers is set in Venice, Italy in 1885 with Rhys Meyers playing Morton Vint, a young writer and publisher who is fascinated by the romantic poet Jeffrey Aspern and wishes to get his hands on the letters Aspern wrote to his mistress Juliana, who is played by Vanessa Redgrave.

It is reported that his next project is a drama called Holy Lands, which has reportedly started filming.
