HBO has announced that its Julia Louis-Dreyfus-starring political comedy Veep is to end after seven award-filled seasons.
The curtain will come down on the show next year, with HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys describing the decision to say goodbye to Selina Meyer (Louis-Dreyfus) as "bittersweet".
"Julia Louis-Dreyfus' comedic brilliance infused Selina with a dynamic presence and a vibrant wit which will ensure her a place in the history of television's most iconic comedic characters," said Bloys.
"We love the show and everyone involved but respect the producers' choice to bring Selina Meyer's journey to its conclusion after an extraordinary run of critical and award-winning acclaim."
It's true BUT don't despair cuz we still have a whole season 7 to write and film. @VeepHBO @BastardMachine @DavidHMandel https://t.co/avX7O2l9cE

The decision to end Veep was not unexpected, as the cast had recently signed one-year contracts for the seventh season.
Created by Armando Iannucci (The Thick of It, In the Loop), Veep has won 22 awards, including five Best Comedy Actress Emmys for Louis-Dreyfus in the past five years.

Veep has also won Best Comedy at the Emmys for the past two years running. The show, and Louis-Dreyfus, are again shortlisted at this year's Emmys, which take place later this month.
