Suranne Jones is back for a second season of Doctor Foster, the reboot of David Lynch's Twin Peaks comes to an end, and Ireland face Serbia in a crucial World Cup qualifier
Pick of the day
Doctor Foster, 9.00pm, BBC One
There were some excellent carpet-chewing moments in the first season of this very English drama starring Suranne Jones as the eponymous GP who discovers her husband's cheating on her.
As the show resumes, it's two years on since doctor Gemma Foster dramatically exposed her husband Simon’s betrayals – what a dinner party that was - and he left town.
Now her life becomes destabilised once again when he (Bertie Carvel) returns. Should be fun.
New tonight
The 21st Century Race for Space, 9.00pm, BBC Two
Everyone's favourite physicist who used to be a keyboard player with D:Ream, Professor Brian Cox, examines the remarkable steps forward in the drive to commercialise space travel.
Pioneered by the likes of maverick billionaire businessman Richard Branson, privately-financed space travel and general space tourism are a lot closer to reality than the pages of a sci-fi novel and there's plenty of cash about for colonisation.
The Farthest, 10.15pm, RTÉ One
Another space adventure! More than 12 billion miles away from Earth, a tiny spaceship is leaving our Solar System and entering the void of deep space - the first human-made object ever to do so.
In all likelihood Voyager will outlive humanity, and this documentary celebrates these machines, the men and women who built them and the vision that propelled them farther than anyone thought possible.
Tony Visconti's Unsigned Heroes, 9.00pm, Sky Arts
American record producer, musician, Bowie mentor and Guitar Star mentor Tony Visconti joins forces with Sky Arts for a new series which culminates in what's being tagged as a special summer concert, so obviously this is all done and dusted.
In the opening episode, Visconti meets with The Police drummer Stewart Copeland and musical polymath Nitin Sawhney, and straight away they discover two 'incredible' musicians.
Ending tonight
Twin Peaks, 9.00pm, Sky Atlantic
Hardcore fans – is there any other kind, really? – might well have stayed up overnight for the 'live' screening of the final episode of David Lynch's second bite at his peculiar cheery pie at 2am. So be careful who you bump into at the watercooler this morning.
By all accounts the season three finale is a bit of a cliffhanger, with plenty of loose ends. Does that mean there's going to be more Twin Peaks?
Don't Miss
World Cup 2018 Qualifier: Republic of Ireland v Serbia, 7.00pm, RTÉ2
The screams of anguish after last Saturday's frankly appalling performance in the 1-1 draw away with Georgia can be made light of with a win here – but you wouldn't be gambling on it.
A win for the Serbs would leave them comfortably clear at the top, while anything less than an Irish win will leave Martin O'Neill's men struggling to qualify for even the play-offs.
But previous big game results - the win against Germany being the obvious one – have seen the Irish rise to the occasion. By 9.40pm things will be a lot clearer.
