It's been reported that Adele is being lined up to star in a new adaptation of Lionel Bart's legendary musical Oliver!

The singer is said to be in talks with West End impresario Cameron Mackintosh about the prospect of playing Nancy, the girlfriend of nefarious villain Bill Sikes in the musical based on Charles Dickens’s classic novel Oliver Twist.

According to The Sun, the singer sees the role as a "new challenge" and a role that could be enjoyed by her four-year-old son, Angelo.

"It would be a major part for her and she’s seriously considering it", a source told the newspaper.

"She’s talked about Angelo being her number one priority and she sees this as a role that he could appreciate too. It would be a new challenge for her but one that she would definitely be up for."

Jack Wilde as the Artful Dodger, Mark Lester as Oliver and Shani Wallis as Nancy in the 1968 film version of Oliver!

The new production is said to be a joint collaboration between Mackintosh and Working Title Films, who previously put together the 2012 big screen adaptation of Les Misérables.

If it happens, this would mark Adele’s debut film appearance and a quirky next step in a massively-successful career that has seen her sell millions of albums and play massive tours at a time when the music business is shrinking.

On the downside, she's noted for suffering from stage fright, while problems with her vocal cords forced her to cancel the remainder of her recent run of shows at London's Wembley Stadium in July.
