Lewis was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1926 as Joseph Levitch. Show business was in his blood with both parents working in the arts.
He started working in comedy at the age of 16 but his career took off in 1945 once he started working with Dean Martin in nightclubs, films and then TV.
The comedy duo fell out after 11 years as a comic act in 1956, but Lewis continued to work solo in slapstick films.
He wrote, directed and starred in The Bellboy and Cinderfella, The Errand Boy,The Nutty Professor and Which Way to the Front and The King of Comedy.
He was married twice and had one daughter and six sons.

He was awarded an Oscar for his humanitarian work but bemoaned the fact: "Because they didn't think enough of my work. Because what I did didn't command consideration because it's slapstick, because it's lowbrow, because the Academy's always been cautious about comedy."
