Ralph Macchio is to bring back his Karate Kid character Daniel La Russo in a new TV series set thirty years after the original movies.

Cobra Kai will air on new pay per view service Youtube Red and will co-star William Zabka as La Russo's arch rival Johnny Lawrence.

WIlliam Zabka who played bad boy Johnny Lawrence will also feature in the series

The series is currently being written and has backing from Sony Pictures Television and Will Smith's production company Overbrook Entertainment.

As the main characters are now middle-aged the name of the programme will be Cobra Kai as, perhaps, Karate Man does not have the same ring to it.

It is uncertain if there will be a replacement for the late Pat Morita who played karate master Mr Miyagi in the films .

Cobra Kai writers Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg say: ‘"Like everyone who grew up in the 1980s, the three of us are enormous fans of The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai will be a true continuation of the original films - packed with comedy, heart and thrilling fight scenes.

"We can’t wait to reignite the LaRusso-Lawrence rivalry, and we’re thankful to our partners at YouTube Red, Sony Pictures Television and Overbrook for their shared enthusiasm in making our dream project a reality."
