Famed French actress Jeanne Moreau, who was known for her roles in Jules et Jim, The Lovers and The Bride Wore Black, has died aged 89.

The star died at her home in Paris, the district's mayor told AFP. The cause of her death has not yet been announced.

Moreau came to prominence in Louis Malle's The Lovers (Les Amants) in 1958. The controversial film, in which she played a woman who leaves her husband for a younger man, was banned in some US cities at the time.
