Madoff: TV Highlights, Friday July 28

Madoff
Madoff

There's a two-part drama about Wall Street fraudster Bernie Madoff, while it's cheerio to Big Brother and Scott Walker gets symphonised on BBC Four

Pick of the day

Madoff - From Millions to Billions, 9.40pm, RTÉ2

Here's a biopic of the man behind the biggest financial fraud in US history, with Richard Dreyfuss in the lead role.

Respected Wall Street fixture Bernie Madoff has a secret. Beneath the image of devoted husband, loving father, and admired community leader, he is a thief with a criminal enterprise he’s been running for decades.

While the family business he runs on his office’s 19th floor is a legitimate financial firm, the supposedly exclusive investment fund he runs down on the mysterious, off-limits 17th floor is actually a pure fraud - a Ponzi scheme.

When a client’s blunder threatens to expose Madoff’s secret, he must seduce a hedge fund to invest, setting in motion the forces that take his scam from the millions to the billions of dollars.

New tonight

Chicago Med, 12.20am, RTÉ2

Here's a hospital-based companion series to the highly addictive Chicago Fire so expect a solid slice of TV drama that's strong on characters and high on tension.

The grand opening of Chicago Med's emergency department is interrupted by victims of a train crash, pushing the staff to their limits.

Dr Will Halstead and the new trauma fellow Dr Connor Rhodes butt heads when the latter pulls rank when it comes to treating patients.

Also starting today:

Ending tonight

Big Brother: Live Final, 9.00pm, 3e

Don't know about you, but I gave up on this show many years ago. But it soldiers on as it gradually slips off the TV schedule.

As ever, the remaining housemates will gather on the sofa for the very last time as host Emma Willis announces the winner of Big Brother 2017. A job in retail (or something) awaits the winner.

Also ending tonight:

Peter Kay's Comedy shuffle, 9.00pm, BBC One: the man himself wows a crowd with his shovel, and Queen make a guest appearance.

Gogglesprogs, 8.00pm, Channel 4: a group of young viewers review the week's telly, including First Dates and Nature's Weirdest Events.

Naked Attraction, 10.00pm, Channel 4: a gym addict and a wedding model go in search of love on this controversial, clothes-free dating show.

Don't Miss

BBC Proms: Scott Walker Revisited, 10.00pm, BBC Four

Anyone with a serious interest in pop music will be dug into this as Jarvis Cocker leads an eclectic line-up in a tribute to the 60s' cult icon Scott Walker. Great voice. Amazing songs. Superb sunglasses. The guy had everything.

Conductor Jules Buckley has arranged tracks from Walker's four eponymous solo albums, performed with live orchestral backing for the very first time.

The performance features Jules Buckley's Heritage Orchestra and London Contemporary Voices.

'It's raining today . . .'
