The first trailer from Michael Fassbender's new film The Snowman has been released and it looks like it's going to be an edge-of-your-seat thriller.

Based the best-selling novel from Norwegian author Jo Nesbø, the crime thriller sees the Irish-German actor play the lead role of detective Harry Hole who is on the hunt for a serial killer.

The film, from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy director Tomas Alfredson, also stars Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation), Charlotte Gainsbourg (Independence Day: Resurgence) and JK Simmons (Whiplash).

In the first-look footage from the movie, Fassbender's detective looks to be nearing breaking point in his search for the elusive killer who targets women.

The trailer reveals that victims are found without their heads, which later turn up on top of snowmen, and that the murderer is playing a dangerous cat-and-mouse game with the police.

The Snowman is scheduled to be released in cinemas on October 13.
