An acrobat fell to his death at the Madrid-based music festival Mad Cool on Friday just minutes before US rock band Green Day took to the stage.

Green Day were initially criticised for performing shortly after the acrobat's death, but the band later issued a statement saying they were unaware he had died until they came off stage.

After performing at the festival, Green Day tweeted: "We just got off stage at Mad Cool Festival to some disturbing news.

"A very brave artist named Pedro lost his life here tonight in a tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends."

The 42-year old performer was named as Pedro Aunion Monroy. The acrobat was a director of In Fact performing arts company and he lived in Brighton, England.

The fatal accident happened as he was descending in an illuminated box between the performances of Alt-J and Green Day.

Many music fans criticised festival organisers on social media for their decision to continue with the concert.

An official statement from the organisers’ Twitter feed, posted overnight, said: "Mad Cool Festival regrets the terrible accident that an aerial dancer has suffered during the second day of the festival.

"For security reasons, the festival decided to continue with the event. We offer our sincere condolences to the dead man’s family.

"Today we will pay tribute to the artist during the festival."

"I couldn't in good faith stay to watch Green Day perform after that," wrote British actor Adrian Randle. "Thoughts go out to the family of the performer."

El Mundo newspaper reported that Madrid police consulted with Mad Cool organisers before allowing the festival to continue

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
