Dave Rosser, who played guitar with US band The Afghan Whigs, has died of cancer aged 50, just months after his diagnosis.

Rosser, who had also worked with Mark Lanegan and US singer songwriter Marc Broussard among others, announced he had inoperable colon cancer in October 2016.

Jeff Klein of Texan indie-rock band My Jerusalem shared a lengthy tribute to Rosser on Facebook on Wednesday.

"There are no words to express how much I love you David Rosser," Klein wrote. "Having you as a friend is and will be one of the finest accomplishments of my entire life. You are truly a rare treasure. I will carry you with me everywhere I go."

Since Rosser's diagnosis, artists and friends including Duff McKagan of Guns N' Roses, Moby and Eagles of Death Metal had united to play benefit shows to raise funds for his medical expenses.

The Afghan Whigs recently returned with new album In Spades

Rosser had played on The Afghan Whigs' most recent album In Spades and also their 2014 release Do the Beast.

The band released their latest record just seven weeks before Rosser's passing.
