63-year old actor Stephen Furst, who played Flounder in the movie Animal House, has died of complications from diabetes.

Stephen’s son, Nathan revealed that the actor died at his home in Moorpark, California on Friday.

Furst played Kent "Flounder" Dorfman in the 1978 film which also starred John Belushi.

The actor subsequently starred in the 1980s medical drama St Elsewhere, on which he played Dr Elliot Axelrod. He worked sporadically as a director on the 1990s sci-fi series Babylon 5 and also acted in the series.

"He was proudest of his family, and he felt blessed and incredibly privileged to have the career that he had and enjoyed," Nathan Furst said.

"To truly honor him, do not cry for the loss of Stephen Furst,"  the family tribute continued. "But rather, enjoy memories of all the times he made you snicker, laugh, or even snort to your own embarrassment. He intensely believed that laugher is the best therapy, and he would want us to practice that now."

Stephen Furst also directed and produced movies in partnership with another son, Griff. Their thriller, Cold Moon is scheduled for release in October.
