Simon Delaney admits his recent debut on Coronation Street has been a bittersweet experience for him as his late mum never got to see him in one of her favourite shows.

The 46-year-old Dubliner made his debut on the cobbles last week as the mysterious and effortlessly charming jewellery salesman Phil who arrives into the factory to sell his wares. He reappeared later in the episode when he popped up in the Rovers for a drink.

Delaney reveals he was heartbroken his mum Margaret, who passed away 28 years ago, missed his cameo.

"My mother, God bless her, she loved Corrie. I think she would have cried for a week after seeing me on it," he told the Irish Sun.

"She died in 1989 before I'd even done Oklahoma in the local school hall. My dad died seven years later. I know they'd both be happy about me being on Corrie."

Fans loved Simon's debut on Coronation Street

Fans of the ITV soap welcomed the light relief Delaney brought to the show, especially in light of the dark grooming storyline involving Bethany Platt and Nathan Curtis which has been going on for the past few weeks.

It wasn't just the viewers who loved Delaney, however, as some of Delaney's Corrie co-stars took to Twitter to compliment him.

The actor was a big hit with viewers at home, with people tweeting that he was "a natural", "fits in so well" and "a great addition" to the soap.

Many fans begged Coronation Street bosses to include his character in more episodes.

Delaney previously tweeted that he had "some craic" filming the scenes on Coronation Street.
