Bill Cosby case ends in mistrial after jury deadlocks

Bill Cosby: mistrial declared

The judge in the Bill Cosby case declared a mistrial today after jurors said they were unable to reach a unanimous verdict.

The 79-year old US comedian has gone on trial for sexual assault in a court in Pennsylvania, accused of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand, a former employee of Temple University, at his Philadelphia-area home in 2004.

Constand's accusation is the only one to result in criminal charges out of dozens of similar allegations from women going back decades.

The statute of limitations has expired for almost all the other accusations of sexual assault and some of Cosby's accusers have not made a formal complaint to police.

Cosby has denied ever assaulting anyone, saying the encounters with Constand and others were consensual.

The trial was widely expected to result in a 10-year prison sentence.
