The Blizzards have released their first music video since reforming and it features Fair City actor Steve Gunn getting involved in a dance off in an underground car park, a DeLorean, and a saxophone solo played by Roy Castle’s son Ben.

Show Me The Science is the Mullingar band’s fourth single since they announced their reunion after splitting up six years ago and lead singer Bressie says he wanted to pay homage to the music of the eighties with what is a very cheesy song and an even cheesier video.

"The Blizzards were never afraid to hide their eighties influences," he told RTÉ Entertainment. "The video is meant to be fun. There are far too many videos of bands staring at the stars or playing guitars on the side of mountains."

"I love the flamboyance of the eighties. People didn’t take themselves too seriously. If you weren’t outrageous back then, you just didn’t fit in. I loved that and it’s the music I grew up listening to - I loved Hall and Oates and as my mother always says, don’t trust anybody who doesn’t like Abba."

After becoming somewhat of a household name on The Voice of Ireland and a reluctant tabloid fixture due to his relationship with Irish model Roz Purcell, Bressie says he’s glad to be back making music again. "It may sound like a cliché but music is an escape," he said. "After what happened in Manchester, music is where young people go - it’s like a safe place."

Bressie: "It may sound like a cliché but music is an escape."

"The Voice for me was brilliant and I loved doing it because I had nothing at the time. I was living in London trying to make my way as a songwriter and you’re only living off royalties so when The Voice was offered to me I had to do it but I wasn’t ready for all that goes along with doing TV - it was a shock to the system. I’ve been quite open about saying that."

Show Me The Science includes a prerequisite ‘80s sax solo and The Blizzards drafted in Ben Castle, who is the son of the late Record Breakers host and champion trumpet player Roy.

As for that DeLorean, let’s just say Bressie has all the right contacts. "I called up a friend of mine who can get his hands on pretty much anything you want. I didn’t even specify a DeLorean; I just asked for a retro car and within a few days he had us a DeLorean."

After some speculation, The Blizzards announced they were reforming last year and have already undertaken a successful 11-date sold-out Back to Basics tour of Ireland and they will also play support to The 1975 at Malahide Castle this Saturday.

"We took ourselves far too seriously the last time," Bressie says. "I’m not saying we didn’t enjoy ourselves but we should have enjoyed ourselves a lot more, put it that way. I think far too many people especially musicians themselves take music far too seriously.

"We’ve taken six years off so I think we may be allowed a little more time to get the new album out."
