Ed Sheeran and James Corden proved themselves to be quite the double act on the latest Carpool Karaoke with wandering hands, classy singalongs and Sheeran breaking his own record for the amount of Maltesers he can fit into his mouth at one time.

The trip began with the talk show host ringing Sheeran to tell him that he left his guitar at Corden's house the previous night.

"I've got it here, but I'm going to be late for work now," explained Corden.

Enter Sheeran, who buckled up and immediately dived into the spirit of things when his hit Shape of You came on.

"It already makes my hips move, this!" enthused Corden. "It's got a real sexy vibe to it."

As they duetted, Sheeran made a beeline for Corden's inside leg.

Shape of You indeed!

"This is taking a turn!" laughed Corden. "I told you - it's a sexy song!"

As Corden gyrated in the driver's seat, Sheeran told him: "Grind on it, James - I want to see you work it!"

"You can't not," he replied.

After a rendition of Sing, during which Corden excelled as co-vocalist, the presenter asked Sheeran was it true that he could fit 47 Maltesers in his mouth - and just happened to have a jar handy.

Corden, fancying himself as a contender, tried his hand/mouth but choked - literally - at 26.

Sheeran, meanwhile, continued like a singer-songwriter possessed by a sugar fix and managed to cram 55 between his cheeks.

Master at work

During the trip, which also included performances of Thinkin' Out Loud, Love Yourself, What Makes You Beautiful and Castle on the Hill, Sheeran revealed he had brought Justin Bieber to a "dive bar" in Tokyo the previous week, a session which was followed by a golfing mishap.

"We ended up at a golf course and he put a golf ball in his mouth and said, 'Go on - hit it out'" Sheeran recounted.

"I was pretty hammered and then I was like, 'Focus, focus, focus! You can't hit him, you can't hit him, you can't hit him!'"

The Bieber golfing gaffe

Sheeran, naturally, "cracked him across the face".

"He was actually really cool about it, surprisingly," he added.

Despite the trip being feelgood telly at its best, Sheeran admitted that he had been "so nervous" about getting in the passenger seat.

"I couldn't see what was funny about me singing my songs in a car," he said. "But instantly we bring out a guitar and it's a lot more comfortable."

"As a person, I can have conversations and be personable. But when it comes to, like, musically, you stand me there with a microphone and I just feel a bit naked. I don't know, a bit weird."

"I've kind of been glued to this guitar since I was 11-years-old," he added. "It's just been a way that if it ever feels awkward I just bring it out."

The memorable encounter concluded with Sheeran helping Corden rework Castle on the Hill for the LA commute - another hit single-in-waiting.
