Aidan Turner broke his finger during a musket training session while filming the new series of hit historical drama Poldark.

Speaking to the BBC, the Dublin-born actor said: "We were busting into a prison and Harry Richardson who plays Demelza’s brother, Drake Carne, was pulling back his rifle and the cock of the rifle caught my little finger on my left hand and pulled it right back.

"I knew something was wrong straight away but I had to finish the scene. The next thirty seconds it felt like jelly."

Turner returns as the smouldering Ross Poldark this Sunday on BBC One and in series three of the epic drama, he must deal with a new family, a new love and new conflicts, as the upheaval of the French Revolution casts a shadow over life in Cornwall.

Turner achieved sex symbol status after several shirtless scenes in series one and two of the show, which is a reboot of the 1970s series based on the novels of Winston Graham and he promises a lot more action in series three.

Poldark is trying to rebuild his marriage to Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) but their fragile peace is disturbed by the arrival of her deeply Methodist brothers Sam and Drake Carne, played by Tom York and Harry Richardson.

Speaking about the new series, Turner said: "We pick up this series with Ross mending his relationship with Demelza. There is obviously a lot of tension still in the air but it seems like they have talked it through so Ross is licking his wounds a little bit and trying to get his relationship back on track again.

"They have their own family to think of now and want to get on with life while hoping for an easier one."

Series three also welcomes a plethora of new cast members including Sean Gilder as Bartholomew "Tholly" Tregirls, a dangerous yet comical old friend of Ross’ father.

Josh Whitehouse joins the cast to play Hugh Armitage, a naval navigator and romantic poet besotted with Demelza. Could be trouble there . . .

Christian Brassington has been cast as depraved clergyman, Reverand Osbourne "Ossie" Whitworth, who hopes to align himself with George Warleggan. John Hopkins plays Sir Francis Bassett who is looking for a candidate to lead the fight against inequality and political corruption.

Poldark, BBC One, Sundays, 9.00pm
